Want to Speak at PubhD?

What is PubhD?

PubhD Dublin is a free event held every month in a Dublin pub, where researchers, PhD candidates and Masters students present their research to a public audience. At each event, three Researchers, from any academic discipline, explain their work to an audience exchange for a pint or two. The talks are at a “pub level” – so the idea is that you don’t have to be an academic to understand the talks.

How does it work?

The general format of PubhD is for the 3 speakers to talk about their research topic for approximately 10 minutes, then switch to the audience for brief 15-20 minute Q&A. All presenters will be offered at the very least one free drink of their choice. There are generally short 5 minute breaks between presenters. Usually, after all the presenters have finished their talks, people hang around and mingle, some people like to ask the speaker a question outside of the Q&A etc.

Why speak at PubhD?

The event has gathered people from all over to come and listen to research and ideas by people studying a broad range of academic disciplines. Both our audience and speakers have been amazed by their experience at PubhD. For PhD students, it’s also useful to be able to summarise your work in 10 minutes, learning how to be concise. It’s an easy way of getting more comfortable talking to people, before giving a talk at a conference or a big event. It’s also an excellent way of giving yourself a boost, and receiving feedback on your work and hearing various viewpoints from a mixed audience of academic background with plenty of different experiences and ideas.

If you are a PhD, masters student or have already completed your PhD, or a post-doc in any academic area and are interested in explaining your work to a friendly and interested audience in a pub in exchange for a pint or two?
